Vaccine Offer Honors Pharmacist’s Grandmother

SKIPPACK PA – As flu season approaches Skippack Pharmacy owner, manager, and chief pharmacist Dr. Mayank Amin says he’s thinking about his grandmother. When she was cared for by home health services, he says, nurses ensured she was protected against viruses and disease whether she could afford vaccines or not.

He hasn’t forgotten her happiness or their kindness, and intends to extend both to others. So for yet another year the pharmacy, 4118 W. Skippack Pike, has launched its “Skip The Flu” program. Under it, senior citizens in need can receive a vaccination against this year’s influenza strains without a cost beyond insurance coverage. And for those who lack insurance?, at no cost at all.

“It breaks my heart when someone calls or comes in, and says they do not have (money) to pay for an essential like a flu shot,” he reports.

“Vaccination has been shown to have many benefits including reducing the risk of flu illnesses, hospitalizations and even the risk of flu-related death in children,” according to the Atlanta-based National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Since Skip The Flu publicly re-appeared last week, Amin says he’s administered about 50 shots to elderly patients, including one in hospice and another more than 100 years old. On occasion, for those unable to leave their homes, Amin has even made house calls. No, that’s not something he can do often, but it’s sometimes necessary, he adds.

Skip The Flu is being offered to any Montgomery County senior with a demonstrated need. For more information or to make an appointment, call the pharmacy at 610-584-6979, or send an e-mail to info@skippackpharmacy.com.
