Discovery Center Hosts New Year Party at Mall
NORTH COVENTRY PA – Four days before the big ball drops in New York City, heralding the start of both a new year and new decade, children and adults gathered Saturday (Dec. 28, 2019) at Coventry Mall on Route 724 for a calendar-turning celebration of their own: the second annual Noon Years Eve Party hosted by the Pottstown Children’s Discovery Center.
The center board of directors is working to create an interactive, hands-on children’s museum in Pottstown. The two-hour party was its latest demonstration of the power of play, and kids’ ability to learn from it.
Its museum-in-progress hasn’t yet found a permanent home, discovery center founder Beth Desch explains. That will take some luck, some downtown Pottstown location scouting and, yes, some significant fund-raising. Until then, the party showed the crowd – dozens of families streamed through its temporary mall space during the day – exhibits and educational materials the museum has already acquired thanks to generous donors.
There were giant blue building blocks for budding architects and engineers (at top). Pine cones showed up in a variety of crafts and games, from painting landscapes to challenging contests (above). Story-tellers and readers spun a yarn or two, youngsters dispatched with snacks and beverages, and promptly at noon balloons dropped to signal the (impending) start of 2020 … without having to stay up past bedtime.
Desch thanked mall management for making the space available, and mentioned Dana Corp. as one of several sponsors who made exhibits possible.
