Steel River Playhouse Seeks New General Manager

POTTSTOWN PA – Steel River Playhouse, which annually produces more than 90 plays, musicals, concerts, and recitals, has begun searching for a new general manager. The current occupant of that position, Diane Nester, has announced she will retire in May (2020) after completing a seven-year tenure in what she calls “seriously, the best job I ever had.”

Nester joined Steel River in May 2013, the organization said, after a successful stint as chair of the region’s Relay for Life event.

The playhouse, which started in Chester County during 2001 and moved to Pottstown in 2005, now entertains more than 20,000 visits every year in a wholly renovated performing arts center at 245 E. High St. The facility features two show venues and busy classrooms, with performance opportunities for all ages that include auditions, classes and workshops, private lesson recitals, and its Senior Follies program.

“The people involved with Steel River, from the staff and volunteers to our patrons, are wonderful,” Nester said. “I’m so proud of the work that is done at the playhouse. I’m continually amazed by the talent and professionalism of our actors and musicians, and the enthusiasm and expertise of our educators.”

Its educational programming includes an extensive summer camp program, as well as private instruction in acting, voice, piano, guitar, flute, and trumpet. Steel River outreach efforts periodically provide sample lessons and classes for the public, scholarships, complimentary study guides, audience talk-back sessions, artists-in-the-classroom, at-theater and traveling children’s shows, after school and summer time enrichment programs, and internships.

To succeed Nester in the part-time position, Steel River’s leadership said it would look for “an individual who has a passion for theater and its role in Pottstown’s revitalization.” The successful candidate also is likely to be “an experienced administrator, with demonstrated understanding and skills in areas including office management and operations, facilities management, policy and procedure development, and bookkeeping and financial reporting.”
