Six School Districts Named ‘Best’ in Music Ed

CARLSBAD CA – Six local school districts – Perkiomen Valley, Pottsgrove, Pottstown, Spring-Ford Area, Boyertown Area, and Phoenixville Area – have been named among 754 districts nationwide that, according to a music-promoting non-profit organization, rank as “the best communities in the nation for music education” during 2020.

The annual awards are presented by the California-based NAMM Foundation, philanthropic arm of the National Association of Music Merchants trade association. They recognize “outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders who have made music education part of a well-rounded education,” it said.

To qualify for the designation, districts answered detailed questions about their funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, and support for music programs. Their responses were verified with district officials, and reviewed by the Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

Music education researchers have determined children who make music benefit from increased educational, cognitive and social skills.

The awards were announced March 25 (2020, Wednesday).
