Eastbound 422 Valley Forge Bridge Opens Monday
Earlier construction on the 422 bridge over the Schuylkill River near Valley Forge
VALLEY FORGE PA – Beginning Monday (Aug. 24, 2020) by 5 a.m., eastbound traffic on U.S. Route will be moved onto the newly built eastbound bridge over the Schuylkill River, between its Route 363 and Route 23 interchanges about two-thirds of a mile west of the Valley Forge Casino Resort, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation reported.
However, the bridge opening will be preceded Sunday (Aug. 23) at 6 p.m. through Monday at 5 a.m. by traffic lane closures and rolling stoppages approaching the Route 363 interchange, as crews paint new traffic lines and relocate construction barriers for the traffic pattern change. PennDOT is moving two lanes of eastbound 422 traffic over from the also new westbound bridge, where the two lanes have been located during the eastbound bridge construction.
The eastbound traffic shift onto the eastbound bridge will improve access onto eastbound lanes from the Route 363 entrance ramp. However, ramp itself will remain restricted to one lane for a few weeks while the contractor completes operations nearby.
And, PennDOT warned, it’s not yet done with the entire bridge project. Following the shift, its contractor must rebuild the center section of 422 at both ends of the bridge where crossover lanes formerly existed; grind areas of concrete on westbound 422 for smoothness; and complete several other work items.
The bridges carry an average of 113,000 vehicles a day. The former bridges were built in 1965. Construction began in February 2016 and is expected to be completed by late October or early November 2020. J.D. Eckman Inc. of Atglen PA is the general contractor on the $97.4 million project.
The new, five-span structures are 785 feet long and have a total width of 146 feet. Each bridge carries six lanes, three westbound and three eastbound with two through lanes in each direction plus a third lane on both sides for drivers to travel between the Route 363 and Route 23 interchanges.
Both bridges were built wide enough for the possible addition of a third through-lane in each direction sometime in the future.
