Fast Three: Pantry Opens at Steel City; Meet Your Cat Saturday; and PA Asks Veterans to Serve, Again
Phoenixville coffeehouse reaches beyond beans and brews
Steel City Coffeehouse and Brewery owner Laura Vernola, with her restaurant and music venue (at top) positioned at 203 Bridge St. in the heart of downtown Phoenixville, has found yet another way to attract customers. She’s added a pantry featuring specialty items made in small batches by “woman, couple, and family-owned food artisans” from around the U.S., she reported in a Friday (Sept. 4, 2020) e-mail.
“We saw a real need for locals, especially those within walking distance, to be able to buy” eggs, milk, butter, non-dairy items and specialty food items, Vernola explained. It includes known brands like Conebella Farm Cheese, Crisp & Co. Pickles, Tait Farm Foods, and Stoudt’s Good Wonderful Market Breads, and others. It shelves also are lined with vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options. An even larger variety is planned for the upcoming baking season.
Certainly, the customer base is there; apartments, refurbished single-family homes, and other dwellings have arisen by the hundreds downtown in recent years, and Phoenixville is renowned for its walk-ability. Vernola said the pantry will be open seven days a week, Monday through Friday beginning at 7 a.m., and Saturday and Sunday beginning at 8 a.m.

In Royersford, Audubon, and Phoenixville, your cat is waiting
There’s no Labor Day weekend rest for volunteers representing CatNAPS of Pottstown Inc., a Pottstown-based non-profit organization. They’ll conduct “Adoption Day for Cats” sessions Saturday (Sept. 5, 2020) in three PetValu retail locations:
- From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the retailer’s Royersford store, 70 Buckwalter Rd.;
- From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in its Audubon store, 2660 Egypt Rd.; and
- From 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in its Phoenixville store, 420 Schuylkill Rd.
In a Friday e-mail the group said its “meet and greet opportunities” allow prospective owners to be introduced to “many kittens in need of their forever homes.”
An opportunity for veterans who care about veterans
If you’re a Pennsylvania resident and military veteran interested in working on behalf of the state’s more than 800,000 other veterans, you may be interested in filling one of two member-at-large positions now available on the Pennsylvania State Veterans Commission. Gov. Tom Wolf called Friday for applicants.
At-large members serve a four-year term. They and other members advise the state adjutant general and the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs on all matters about the status, employment, welfare, benefits and support of veterans and veterans’ programs in the commonwealth. It’s an important role, in that Pennsylvania is home to the fourth largest veteran population in the nation.
The e-mail only application process opened Friday, and applications are being accepted through Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. Applications and more information about the positions is available online, here.
