Gas Line Damage Prompts Royersford Corner Evacuation

ROYERSFORD PA – Work crews accidentally struck a natural gas line Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 9, 2020) at the intersection of Church Street and North 3rd Avenue, prompting an evacuation of the immediate area, traffic disruption, and the presence of firefighting personnel at the scene for about two hours, the Royersford Fire Department reported.

The department and Spring City’s Liberty Fire Company both responded to the incident following a 2:30 p.m. call by Montgomery County dispatchers. Police partially closed roads surrounding the potential hazard, as emergency responders went to neighboring buildings to evacuate occupants as a precaution, according to the report. There was no indication of how many people were temporarily relocated.

Liberty’s team deployed what it called a “blitz line” (at top) to continuously spray the leaking pipe with water, its Facebook post said, as a way to “limit the hazards” and also help prevent ignition of the gas.

Repair workers from PECO Energy later arrived to secure the leak and fix the damage.
