A Treasured Pottsgrove Mentor, Todd Van Horn, Passes

LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – Todd Van Horn, who influenced dozens of Pottsgrove School District athletes as a wrestling and lacrosse coach, and who annually helped hundreds more as a high school dean of students, died unexpectedly and suddenly during the weekend, district families were notified Monday (Oct. 19, 2020) in three separate e-mails.

The obituary of Todd William Van Horn, 51 (here), was published Wednesday (Oct. 21) by Houck & Gofus Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Pottstown, which is handling arrangements. Visitation hours have been set for Saturday (Oct. 24) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the football field of Pottsgrove High School, 1345 Kauffman Rd., Pottstown PA. A life celebration will follow at 1 p.m.

Van Horn was described in a message from the Falcons football team as a “loving father (and) husband,” and “a pillar of the Pottsgrove community.” Friday night’s (Oct. 23) football game vs. Phoenixville will be dedicated by the team to his memory, the club said. Information about other efforts to support the Van Horn family “will be provided in the near future,” it added.

High school Principal Dr. Bill Ziegler delivered his personal message to families “with a heavy heart.” He acknowledged the close bond Van Horn developed with many students over the years, and encouraged parents to talk with those who may be at home alone during the day; “reach out to them and see how they are doing,” he asked.

Counseling support is available for students and staff at the high school throughout the week during normal school hours, Ziegler noted. “If your son or daughter would like to speak with one of our counselors, they can come to the high school and should enter through the main office doors. We also have counselors available via Zoom. If they would like a Zoom session, please contact the main office at 610-326-5105.”

He also asked the community to “be respectful by giving the Van Horn family some privacy as they work through this shocking loss.”

And in notifying the media of Van Horn’s passing, former district athletic director and now district Community Relations Director Gary DeRenzo added: “Our heart breaks for the Van Horn family and the entire Pottsgrove community.”
