Report Says Grocery Outlet Looks Toward Local Return
COLLEGEVILLE PA – Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, the California-based supermarket franchise that until October 2018 operated and then closed a location in Royersford’s Park Towne Plaza shopping center, is looking to make a multi-store return to western Montgomery County, a retailing business news service is reporting.
Winsight Grocery Business, which in promotions claims to cover “today’s rapidly evolving grocery industry,” says Grocery Outlet “looks poised to begin a significant move to expand” on the East Coast, including a number of stores in Pennsylvania.
Qualified independent manager-operators for “new stores opening soon” – potentially in Collegeville, King of Prussia, and Norristown, as well as several others in the southeastern portion of the state – are being sought in currently published help-wanted advertising. One such opening offers a pay range from $90,000 to $175,000 annually, an ad states.
No street-specific locations are mentioned in either the Winsight article or the ads themselves. Winsight, in its “exclusive”-labeled story written by Executive Editor Jon Springer, suggests Grocery Outlet is even considering another store in Royersford.
The company describes itself as “one of the largest extreme-value grocery retailers in the United States. We provide name-brand grocery items at up to 60 (percent) off conventional grocery store retail prices, with over $2.5 billion in annual gross sales.”
Before its closure two years ago, the Grocery Outlet in Park Towne Plaza – previously part of the Amelia’s super market chain that the company bought during 2012, merged and re-branded – was a busy place. Its announced closing at the time brought protests and pleas for solutions or a change of heart from local politicians.
The company did not publicly explain why the store was shuttered. It simply notified plaza ownership, in advance as required by its lease, that it would not renew as a tenant. Its large space was vacant for a period, but earlier this year was remodeled and opened as part of the Ace Hardware chain.
As of now, the Grocery Outlet closest to western Montgomery County is located in Quakertown, Bucks County, about a 38-minute drive away.
