Ringing Hill's Recruitment Campaign Wins Award

LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – Ringing Hill Fire Company’s volunteer recruitment and retention campaign (above), which got under way earlier this year thanks to federal grant funding, has received Philadelphia regional recognition from public relations experts, the fire company’s hired promotional firm announced Thursday (Dec. 10, 2020).

The campaign, developed by public relations specialist Kellie Dietrich (at top) of Jenkintown-based Communication Solutions Group Inc., won a Ladle in the Community Relations category during the Pepperpot Awards presentation by the Philadelphia chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. The virtual awards ceremony was held Dec. 1 (Tuesday).

The public relations costs, and an accompanying plan to pay three firefighters for 12-hour weekday shift coverage at the fire company’s White Pine Lane station, are included in a four-year Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (SAFER) grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The campaign‘s stated goal was to increase Ringing Hill’s volunteer base using a new website, social media management and ad targeting, printed recruitment materials, public relations, and face-to-face recruitment. The target audience was anyone between the ages of 16 and 45, within Ringing Hill’s boundaries in Lower Pottsgrove, who would be interested in training to become a volunteer firefighter, junior firefighter, fire police, or auxiliary member.

Before the campaign began, Ringing Hill had a total of 29 members. It sought to bring in five new members per year, over the four-year period, for 20 new volunteers. In the campaign’s first nine months, Ringing Hill exceeded its goal by bringing on 26 new firefighters, and receiving 44 volunteer inquiries, Dietrich reported.

“Without Kellie and her team’s hard work, we would not have been able to gain the quality and quantity of new members that we have,” according to Derek Dry, the fire company’s assistant chief, and recruitment and retention committee chair. “We look forward to working with Communication Solutions in the remaining years of our grant to strengthen our volunteer base and help people reach their full potential at Ringing Hill.”

The annual Pepperpot Awards acknowledge the best public relations campaigns, tactics and professionals in the Philadelphia area. Communication Solutions has found a niche in providing communications support and volunteer recruitment efforts to more than 30 fire and emergency medical services companies in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
