Road Safety in Snow Depends on Preparation

LIMERICK PA – As Pennsylvania Department of Transportation crews work today to prepare for what AccuWeather forecasters claim will be a whopper of a local snow and ice storm, it’s worth knowing that what treatments cover state roads, and how and when they’re applied, make a difference in their effectiveness.

PennDOT has created an infographic, titled “The Science of Winter Road Treatments” (below), to explain why salt alone isn’t always the best choice to ensure travelers’ safety in coldest temperatures. Mixing it with anti-skid materials, or wetting it with brine, or even avoiding it altogether might be best under certain conditions.
