PennDOT Crew Scrapes, Digs Out Road Drainage Ditches

SOLVING ROAD ICING PROBLEMS – Water drainage has long been a problem North Sanatoga Road, along the steep hill about midway between North Pleasant View and Snell roads in Lower Pottsgrove. From spring though fall, rain streams from the north side across the road to the south, and creates soggy conditions on its shoulders. In the winter, snow melt and overnight re-freezing give rise to dangerous black ice. A Pennsylvania Department of Transportation crew attempted Wednesday and Thursday (Jan. 13-14, 2021) to address the issue by cleaning out drainage ditches and culverts on the north side of North Sanatoga to keep the runoff contained. The road is a state-owned highway. Its workers spent several hours on the clean-up over the two-day period. The road was reduced to a single lane, with flaggers controlling traffic on both ends, while the job was under way.
