DUI Charged Following North Coventry Traffic Stop

NORTH COVENTRY PA – A Reading PA man who on Sunday (Jan. 24, 2021) drove a black BMW sedan on Route 724 while “under the influence of marijuana,” the North Coventry Police Department alleges, was stopped at about 8:20 p.m. and later arrested for DUI and another offense, the department reported on its CrimeWatch website.

Joseph Rafael Lopez, 28, faces one count each of driving under the influence, and possession of a controlled substance, according to the web report.

The department stated one of its patrol units was traveling east on 724 near the Route 100 South off-ramp when its officer observed the sedan traveling on the ramp. The BMW driver, later identified as Lopez, “failed to yield to oncoming traffic at the posted yield sign of the intersection, in the process “nearly striking the officer’s patrol vehicle,” it added. That’s when the officer conducted a traffic stop.

During a subsequent investigation, the report said, the officer “determined Lopez was operating his vehicle while under the influence of marijuana. A search of the BMW was conducted,” during which the department reported its “officer located 186 pills of Adderall in the vehicle.” Adderall, according to Healthline, is a central nervous system stimulant that contains dextroamphetamine and amphetamine.

Lopez was taken into custody and transported to the department, where it said he submitted to a blood draw. Lopez was processed and later released to a sober adult, the report indicated.
