Pottstown Police Investigate Thursday Rt. 100 Accident
POTTSTOWN PA – Pottstown police investigators took careful measurements (at top and below) Thursday afternoon (April 22, 2021) at the intersection of Shoemaker Road and southbound Route 100, as they investigated an accident that occurred there shortly after 3 p.m.
Montgomery County dispatcher reports at the time preliminarily indicated the incident involved a truck and two individuals on separate two-wheeled transports, such as a bicycle or scooter. That information could not be confirmed later Thursday. Bystanders at the scene were said to be attempting to help those afflicted. The extent of injuries, if any, was not specified.
Mann’s Towing later arrived to remove a truck from the scene.
Southbound traffic on 100 (above) was stopped for a time at its intersection with North State Street and Upland Square Drive. As progress in the investigation allowed, responders alternately released traffic stopped in both directions on Shoemaker, and northbound on 100.
At least one driver, in a white van, grew impatient during the wait. Despite police-shouted orders to the contrary, the van driver turned without authorization from the northbound lane of 100 onto westbound Shoemaker, potentially risking another accident.
Seeing the van speed away in the direction of Pottstown Municipal Airport, a nearby officer acted quickly to grab a radio and reported its license plate number to colleagues. It’s unknown if the van was subsequently found or stopped.
The 100-Shoemaker intersection has been the scene of several past accidents, including one in 2020 in which a pedestrian was killed.
