Autism Fun Day Returns from Spring-Ford ‘A Team’

LIMERICK PA – For its eighth year The A Team of Spring-Ford, a support network for families of children with autism in the Spring-Ford area, will hold its annual Family Fun Day on May 22 (2021; Saturday) from 1-4 p.m. at the Spring Valley YMCA, 19 West Linfield-Trappe Rd. The free, outdoor event is open to the public, and families from local school districts are invited to attend.

It expects to offer a resource fair of more than 30 vendors for families with children on the autism spectrum, as well as activities including adaptive exercises and self-defense classes. Donations and proceeds collected during the day will benefit the Spring Valley YMCA’s Shooting Stars program for kids with special abilities.

Autism now affects one in 54 children and one in 34 boys, according to Autism Speaks, an autism science and advocacy organization. It is the fastest-growing developmental disorder in the U.S. and costs a family an average of $60,000 a year. There is no medical detection of or cure for autism, advocates say.

The day’s sponsors include the Spring Valley YMCA, the Shields family, Providence Wealth Management, Home Furnishing Market, Camp Lee Mar, Rita’s Water Ice, and Sweet & Sassy. A rain date of May 23 (Sunday) has been scheduled if necessary.
