YWCA, Pottstown Library Named Grant Winners

POTTSTOWN PA – The YWCA Tri-County Area and the Pottstown Regional Public Library have each won shares of more than $196,000 in literacy grants distributed to 38 Pennsylvania nonprofit organizations by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, it announced Thursday (May 13, 2021). Its money will support summer, family and adult literacy programs, it said

The YWCA is scheduled to receive $10,000, and the library, $3,000. The money distributed across Pennsylvania is a portion of $10.5 million the foundation dedicated this year to reading and literacy initiatives. Thursday’s grants represent the foundation’s largest one-day donation in its 28-year history, it added.

Projects for which grants were presented include promoting childhood summer reading, helping adults learn to read and prepare for the high school equivalency exam, and helping individuals to learn English.

“We understand the meaningful impact that … foundation investments and grants can have on local schools, nonprofits and libraries,” Dollar General CEO and foundation board member Todd Vasos said. “We are proud to champion the positive work by each of today’s recipients, and are happy to help individuals increase their potential and pursue their dreams” through education and literacy, he added.

The foundation noted it also is accepting applications for youth literacy grants through May 20 (Thursday), here. They will support schools, public libraries, and nonprofit organizations in implementing new literacy efforts or expanding existing ones. Funding can be used to buy new technology, equipment, books, materials, or software to enhance literacy programs.

Each year, the foundation awards its funds to nonprofits, schools, and libraries within a 15-mile radius of a Dollar General store or distribution center. It also provides a student referral program for individuals interested in learning how to read, speak English, or prepare for the high school equivalency exam. A national literacy directory, here, lists 47 such programs with a 25-mile radius of Pottstown.
