From PA to DE, Pottstown Girl Scout Makes Difference
POTTSTOWN PA – More than 160 miles separates Pottstown and Bethany DE, but for a borough resident and award-winning Girl Scout bridging that distance required only the ability to recognize a need and her willingness to help meet it.
Pottstown’s Devyn Stek (at top), a student at Villa Maria Academy High School, is one of 80 scouts who were named Friday (May 21, 2021) as winners of the highest honor that can be earned in Girl Scouting: its prestigious Gold Award.
The award recognizes scouts in grades 9 through 12 who “demonstrate extraordinary leadership through sustainable and measurable Take Action projects,” according to the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania, of which Stek is a member. It represents “the culmination of a girl’s demonstration of leadership ability, time management, creativity, initiative, and a significant mastery of skills.”
To earn a Gold Award, Girl Scouts must individually identify a community problem, develop a plan to solve it, recruit a team to assist them, and create sustainable solutions that last for years beyond their project.
For Stek, that process began in the Bethany area, a popular Delaware coastal resort. Its Ocean View Church of Christ is located nearby, just west on Route 26. She does not attend the church, but during a trip she saw it and imagined how it might be beautified. Stek contacted and worked with church officials, explaining what she had mind. They liked the idea, agreed, and she and other scouts tackled the project.
The result, her Gold Award indicates, helped brighten not only the church but the entire community.
“While this was a year of extreme change and uncertainty,” Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania CEO Kim E. Fraites-Dow said, Stek and her fellow award-winners “persevered through it all and saw their ambitious projects to completion.” They “join an elite group of dreamers and doers, exemplifying the Girl Scout promise of making the world a better place,” she added in comments during the May 16 award ceremony at Camp Laughing Waters in New Hanover Township.
