Tower: Vaccinations Declining; ‘Make An Appointment’

WEST READING PA – As area vaccination rates decline, Tower Health officials Wednesday (Aug. 4, 2021) urged local residents who have yet to be protected from COVID-19, and its most troubling variant, to obtain a vaccination as quickly as possible.

“A recent CDC report showed that nearly 100 percent of COVID-19 hospitalizations are among individuals who are not vaccinated,” Dr. Debra Powell, chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Tower’s Reading Hospital, said. “I strongly encourage everyone eligible who has not been vaccinated to schedule their appointment. This is our best defense as the highly contagious Delta variant continues to spread rapidly.”

Tower reports that at the end of 2020, before widespread availability of coronavirus vaccines, its hospitals saw an average of more than 350 COVID-19 in-patients daily. At the end of June 2021, the average dropped to fewer than 10. Between Dec. 17 (2020) and June 30, Tower Health reported it administered a total of 85,716 COVID-19 vaccines.

“Data shows that vaccinations are safe, effective, and have significantly reduced in-patient hospitalizations,” Tower President and CEO P. Sue Perrotty added.
