So Far, Vecchio Only Applicant for Pottsgrove Seat

LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – Applications from anyone interested in serving as an interim member of the Pottsgrove School District Board of School Directors must be submitted by no later than the close of business Tuesday (Oct. 12, 2021) at the district office, 1301 Kauffman Rd. The successful applicant will fill a board vacancy left by former member and President Robert Lindgren, who resigned.

As of Friday (Oct. 8), according to a district representative, only one person – Joe Vecchio, who is competing uncontested for the same position in the November general election – had applied to fill the opening. Vecchio made his interest known during an earlier school board meeting, indicating he “wanted to get a head start” on what he anticipated would be his successful election to the board.

The district, on its website, reports the interim opening is likely to be available “for only two school board meetings” scheduled for Oct. 26 and Nov. 9, as well as any special meetings called during that period. After the municipal election, its winner is expected to be sworn in to fill the seat. Persons who are interested in the interim vacancy and meet its qualifications are encouraged to apply.

The school board will hold an Oct. 26 (Tuesday) special meeting to interview all interested candidates, and is expected to immediately appoint a successor to the interim seat when interviews are concluded.

Here’s the district list of qualifications. Applicants:

  • Must be of good moral character, be 18 years of age, a resident of the district for at least one year before the date of election or appointment, and shall not be a holder of any office or position as specified in Section 322 of the Pennsylvania School Code; nor shall the individual be a member of the municipal council;
  • Shall not have been removed from any office of trust under federal, state or local laws for any malfeasance in such office;
  • Shall not be engaged in a business transaction with the school district, be employed by the school district, or receive pay for services from the school district, except as provided by law; and
  • Shall take and subscribe to the oath or affirmation prescribed by statute before entering the duties of the office.

Interested candidates must submit “a letter of interest” and their resume to be received at the district office no later than Tuesday. Application materials can be mailed or hand-delivered, and must be addressed to Dr. David Finnerty, Superintendent of Schools, in care of Christina Breyer, Pottsgrove School District Office, 1301 Kauffman Road, Pottstown, PA 19464.
