Update: One Injured in Snell Road Fire Wednesday

Fire Hits Snell Road Home Wednesday Morning

LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – The cause of a fire that broke out Wednesday (Nov. 24, 2021) at about 9:18 a.m. in a family home at 1475 Snell Rd. in Lower Pottsgrove remains undetermined, township Fire Marshal Lew Babel said. About 75 percent of the structure was damaged in the smoky blaze, he reported.

A man who was sleeping, and who was the home’s sole human occupant at the time, sustained second-degree burns. He was being cared for at the Lehigh Valley Health Network Burn Recovery Center in Allentown, Babel added. Lower Pottsgrove police at the scene reported the man carried a dog in his arms as he jumped from a front bay window to escape the flames. The animal’s condition is unknown.

Other members of the victim’s family were not home at the time.

Snell Road property owners who are the family’s neighbors watched anxiously as the two-lane highway between North Sanatoga and Pruss Hill roads filled with fire-fighting engines and tankers, police cruisers, ambulances, and the personal vehicles of volunteer first responders. Nearby residents asked passers-by about the extent of the fire damage, and expressed concern for the family’s welfare.

Tankers from more than a half-dozen area fire departments and companies played a prominent role in putting out the flames, Babel said. He added the area where the home was located “had no water service,” meaning traditional fire hydrants were unavailable nearby. The presence of the tankers, each of which can haul thousands of gallons, ensured plenty of water was on hand.

Fire police diverted traffic away from Snell, and maintained barricades at both ends of the road, until the home was extinguished and responders left the scene. The family has made temporary arrangements for lodging elsewhere, Babel said.
