By 2023, Southeast PA Gets New ‘835’ Area Code

HARRISBURG PA – Telephone numbers available to be assigned under the 610 and 484 area codes are running out, and probably will be depleted by mid-2023. When that happens, residents and businesses in an unspecified portion of Montgomery County, and across Berks, Chester, Lehigh, Delaware, and Northampton counties, will receive a new area code: 835.

The addition was approved Thursday (Dec. 2, 2021) by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission, under a petition filed by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator. The administrator is a “neutral third-party entity that allocates telephone numbering resources,” the commission said.

The approval specifies no new 835 numbers will be assigned in the area until the remaining 610 and 484 numbers “are completely exhausted.” Beyond adding the new area code, not much else changes, the commission indicated. Existing 610 and 484 numbers would remain unchanged under the plan.

Because the region is already served by two overlay area codes, callers have been required to use 10-digit dialing when making calls since 1999. That’s when 484 became the new area code on the block. “The eventual addition of the new 835 area code covering the same geographic area will not require any changes to the way area residents and businesses dial telephone calls,” it said.
