‘Undermined’ Pier Closes Bridge in Marlborough

MARLBOROUGH PA – An underwater inspection Wednesday (Dec. 22, 2021) of the bridge that carries Swamp Creek Road traffic in Marlborough Township across the Unami Creek found that a bridge pier has been undermined, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. It immediately closed the bridge and created a detour route (at top), the agency added.

The road will remain closed “for a few weeks until underpinning work is performed to prevent future scouring,” PennDOT reported. Work to repair the three-span stone masonry arch bridge is expected to begin in early January (2022). During the closure, Swamp Creek Road drivers will be directed to use Geryville Pike, Route 63, Route 563, and Whites Mill Road.

Travelers are advised to allow extra time when near the work area, because PennDOT said it expects backups and delays will occur. The repair schedule depends on acceptable weather.

Built in 1892, the Swamp Creek Road bridge had earlier been damaged by Tropical Storm Ida. PennDOT estimates that 203 vehicles travel across the 89-foot-long, 20-foot-wide structure each day.
