No Students Injured in Lower Pottsgrove Car-Bus Crash

LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – A Pottsgrove School District bus, filled with students headed home from classes, and a four-door passenger vehicle collided Monday (Jan. 10, 2022) at about 3:27 p.m. at the intersection of Buchert and Kepler roads, Lower Pottsgrove police said. No students were injured in the accident, the district reported, but police said an adult passenger in the car was hospitalized.

Volunteers from the Ringing Hill and Sanatoga fire departments (above), their fire police, three Goodwill ambulances, and four police department patrol units – as well as its chief – all responded. The intersection, with the Walnut Ridge housing community located at its southeast corner, has been the site of multiple accidents over a period of years.

Names of those involved, and details about the Monday incident were not immediately available. Investigators continued to gather information at the scene, and their reports had not yet been filed. Police Chief Rick Bell joined in their efforts; he could be seen taking photos intended to supplement his officers’ paperwork.

District Superintendent Dr. David Finnerty, Director of Facilities Jeffrey Cardwell, and Community Relations Director Gary DeRenzo all arrived on the scene a short time after the accident was reported. Finnerty climbed aboard the bus to personally talk to its occupants.

Many students were later seen staring out from the bus to watch first responders as they occupied Buchert Road. Flashing emergency lights and workers involved in accident-related tasks surrounded them.

In a message sent later Monday to its families and employees, the district said the bus was transporting non-public school riders at the time. The families of those involved were notified their students were safe. By 4:15 p.m., within an hour of the impact, the students had been transferred onto a different bus for the remaining trip home.

The affected bus (above) sustained damage to its front bumper, headlight, and its front crossing control arm. The car, a Chevrolet Cruze (below), incurred disabling damage to its rear fender and bumper, side panel, and trunk, and was removed from the scene by Hawk’s Towing. As a precaution, drivers of both the bus and car were said to have been taken to Pottstown Hospital for evaluation.

Traffic commuting east and west on Buchert, and to a lesser extent north on Kepler, increased as the investigation progressed. Fire police allowed single lanes of vehicles in opposing directions on Buchert to alternately pass the scene (at top), and occasionally turn from Kepler. Cars exiting Walnut Ridge onto Kepler were detoured south and away from the congestion.
