One Injured in Single-Vehicle Crash in Pottstown

POTTSTOWN PA – Three people were involved, but police said only one person was injured, during a single-vehicle accident (at top) that occurred Friday (March 18, 2022) at about 11:17 a.m. at the corner of East High and Madison streets. A sports utility vehicle crashed through the sign outside the law offices of Wolf, Baldwin and Associates, 800 E. High St., and came to rest on its left side against the office building.

The injured victim, whose name and age were not reported, was taken by Goodwill Ambulance to Reading Hospital for treatment, Pottstown police confirmed. Although a portion of its exterior sign was torn away (below) and a decorative planting wall there smashed, the office building itself did not appear damaged. An employee reported all inside were safe.

The car, a gray-colored four-door Jeep wagon carrying its driver and two passengers, was traveling east on East High toward Madison when the accident occurred, police said.

They alleged the car traveled through the intersection, hit the stop sign there, and then hit the planter wall and business sign. It apparently spun about 90 degrees and flipped on its side during the initial impact, and ended on its driver’s side with its rooftop snug against the building’s west front corner.

Police said their investigation was continuing and could not offer details until their report was completed. However, one individual in handcuffs was seen talking with officers at the scene. Pending charges, if any, were not disclosed.

Dispatchers called fire or fire police units from Pottstown, Sanatoga, Ringing Hill, Gilbertsville, and Upper Pottsgrove fire companies to the scene as first responders. Several Pottstown Police Department patrol cars, Goodwill Ambulance, and Hawk’s Towing also were on site. Fire police blocked East High Street in both directions at North Bailey and Eden streets, and on side streets as well, and detoured traffic around the scene.

The accident attracted the attention of passers-by, many of whom gathered to gawk on the southwest corner of Madison, near the Pottstown post office. A one point during the emergency response, seven people had their cell phones out and arms extended to record the aftermath on video.
