Go Take A Hike (Or Ride) on ‘Celebrate Trails Day’

POTTSTOWN PA – Celebrate Trails Day, created by the Washington DC-based Rails-to-Trails Conservancy during 2013, marks its ninth anniversary April 23 (2022; Saturday), the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission reports. The event is held annually on the fourth Saturday of April to promote the nation’s trails, general wellness, an appreciation of the outdoors, and active transportation.

For its part, the commission noted, it continues to invest in the greater Philadelphia area’s Circuit Trails. That’s the more than 800-mile network of multi-use trails which includes the Schuylkill River Trail, the Perkiomen Trail, and the Chester Valley Trail. The network, it said, offers access to the region’s rivers, creeks, and streams, and also allows safer and efficient travel by bicycle or foot, free from motorized traffic.

With financial support from the William Penn Foundation, the commission’s Regional Trails Program has provided $22 million in funding to more than 120 trail planning, design, and construction projects.

In the past year, the commission said it awarded more than $2.7 million to projects, created 10 new miles of trails, and completed three major projects: the Delaware River Heritage Trail in Mansfield and Florence NJ; the new Cramer Hill Waterfront Park in Camden NJ; and the Scudder Falls Shared Use Path over the Delaware River.
