Three Students Win Corporate National Merit Scholarships

EVANSTON IL – Three area high school students, two from Collegeville and one from Harleysville, were named Wednesday (April 27, 2022) as among about a thousand nationwide winners of corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarships. The amounts range in value from $1,000 to $10,000 per year, and can be used at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university of the recipients’ choice.

Winning locally were:

  • Rahul R. Pallela of Collegeville, who attends Spring -Ford Area High School in Royersford, named as the winner of a National Merit Pfizer Inc. scholarship presented to children of its employees. Pallela named computer science as a probable career field;
  • Jacob G. DeLuca of Harleysville, who attends Perkiomen Valley High School, named as the winner of a National Merit Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company scholarship presented to agent or employee children. DeLuca named law as a probable career field; and
  • Irene M. Biju of Collegeville, who attends Methacton High School, named as the winner of a National Merit Johnson & Johnson scholarship. Biju named law as a probable career field.

The announcement highlighted the first group of finalists in the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. All received awards financed by 136 corporations, company foundations, and other business organizations. Corporate sponsors provide scholarships to children of their employees, residents of communities the company serves, or those who plan to pursue college majors or careers the sponsor wishes to encourage.

National Merit Scholarship Corporation also will name recipients of its $2,500 scholarships May 11, and winners of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards on June 1 and July 11. By the end of this year’s competition, about 7,500 academic champions will have won National Merit scholarships worth approximately $28 million, it said.
