‘Accidental’ Gun Discharge Hits Douglassville Woman

DOUGLASSVILLE PA – A 41-year-old Douglassville woman was hit in the back by a bullet, Pennsylvania State Police from the Troop L Barracks in Reading reported Friday (April 29, 2022), in what they said was an “accidental discharge of a firearm.”

The incident occurred a day earlier, Thursday (April 28) at around 5 p.m. in a community of single-family homes on York Road, Union Township. Troopers reported a “thorough” investigation, which at the time they said was continuing, determined the shooting was not intentional. The woman, who was not identified, was transported to Reading Hospital for what were described as “non-life-threatening injuries.”

A separate report published in the Reading Eagle newspaper, citing emergency responder sources, stated the bullet “came through the wall” of the home where the victim was located and struck her “midback.” The “round,” as described by troopers, was said to have left a hole in the side of the house. The woman reportedly was “conscious and alert” when an ambulance and first-responder assistance arrived at 5:20 p.m.

The accidental shooter, who was not identified by troopers in any way, was at an adjacent property at the time. The circumstances under which the mishap occurred were not offered in the the troopers’ public information release. It also did not indicate if any individuals involved with the gun were cited or charged.

Elderly Boyertown man a scammer victim

BOYERTOWN PA – In a separate and unrelated incident also reported Thursday (April 28) at about 5 p.m., Reading-based troopers said they were investigating a theft in which an 81-year-old Boyertown area man was the victim of unidentified scammers who stole $15,000.

The victim told troopers he had received a call “from an individual claiming to be (his) grand-daughter, and an unidentified male who claimed to be a police officer.” Both said the female needed to raise money as bail.

An individual was sent to the man’s home, where “the victim handed him” the total in cash.
