Memorial Day: Observance Scheduled at Historic Cemetery

NORRISTOWN PA – The service of soldiers and veterans interred at Norristown’s historic Montgomery Cemetery, 1 Hartranft Ave., will be honored by the county Historical Society on Saturday (May 28, 2022) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wreaths will be laid in the cemetery at the monuments of Gen. John Frederick Hartranft, Gen. Winfield Scott Hancock, the Memorial Rose Garden, and the plot Zook Post #11 of the Grand Army of the Republic.

Hartranft was born in what is now New Hanover Township, in an area on the north side of Cross Road at Sanatoga Road. It has been commemorated with a marker (below) by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.

The day’s observance will begin with local Boy Scout troops and Civil War re-enactors assisting in the program and its wreath-laying. Volley fire at each site will be provided by Baker Fisher Camp #101. Many participants will be dressed in period costumes. Community residents are invited to attend and join in the tribute.

Sons of Union Veterans will conduct a Rose Petal Ceremony at the graves of Civil War soldiers at the Zook GAR Post. Children who attend will be asked to assist in the ceremony.
