LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – Sixty-sixth annual commencement exercises Friday night (June 10, 2022) within Pottsgrove High School’s stadium on School Lane sent its 2022 graduating senior class of 234 students out into the world with bright hopes and broad smiles, amid the cheers of their families, friends, and well-wishers.

The capped-and-gowned seniors – men in maroon, women in white – marched along the grassy field and down into the rows of chairs prepared for them earlier during the day. They were accompanied by an uptempo rendition of Sir Edgar Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance,” performed by members of the Pottsgrove High School Concert Band led by its director, Ellie Zerefos.

The graduates, class Valedictorian Nevada Grant claimed, were ushering themselves out through Pottsgrove’s doors with both personal and collective flames of passion burning within each. “It’s hot. It’s bright. But more importantly, it’s powerful,” she said. “Your passion stretches beyond your thoughts and becomes a reality,” Grant acknowledged.

There’s danger, too, she warned, “there is danger in leaning into passion.” It can be all consuming, Grant noted, but a “controlled passion that is managed and kept in check causes changes the world needs to see.” She urged her classmates to stir, but carefully maintain, their fires for their, and the planet’s, benefit.

“While you’ve been going through this journey, there’s been a number of people who stood by you during this time, offering advice, providing support, giving you guidance,” high school Principal Dr. Jeffrey Smith reminded graduates. “Find the time to thank people you picked you up and helped you get through the tough days,” he said. “Be sure to acknowledged the people you pushed you and motivated you to do things that you never thought were possible.”

A video of the nearly two-hour presentation, including the awarding of diplomas to each recipient, was broadcast live by The PCTV network and is also available for viewing at its YouTube channel, here, and above.

At one point the ceremony was briefly paused by a medical issue that was handled by personnel attending the event. School District Superintendent Dr. David Finnerty was among the first to notice the problem, and hurried from his position on stage into nearby seats to offer help. The person affected was able to walk with and accompany responders for additional assistance.
