Berks County is offering a two-hour class on how to safely can tomatoes and tomato products for the winter ahead. Montgomery County will test canners’ pressure gauges to ensure they’re safe.
Tomato, Salsa Preservation Lessons in Berks County
LEESPORT PA – An in-person workshop on “Home Food Preservation: Tomatoes and Salsa” has been scheduled by Penn State Extension Berks County for Aug. 18 (2022; Thursday) from 6-8 p.m. at its office, 1238 County Welfare Rd., Leesport. The event is open to the public; a $15 participation fee and advance registration are required.
The workshop will cover the basics of water bath and atmospheric steam canning for safely processing tomatoes and tomato products. The class will be taught by Senior Extension Educator Andy Hirneisen. Its registration deadline is Aug. 15. For more information, send an e-mail to ajh284@psu.edu.
Get Canning Pressure Gauges Tested in Collegeville
COLLEGEVILLE PA – Free testing of home canning pressure gauges is being offered Aug. 25 (2022; Thursday) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Montgomery County office of Penn State Extension, 101 Bridge Rd., Collegeville. The service is open to the public, but appointments are required; call 610-489-4315 for a time slot.
Canning food with a pressure canner requires an accurate dial gauge to ensure food safety, Penn State reminded home cooks.
Participants need to bring only the dial gauge canner lid or gauge, not the entire canner. Weighted gauges do not require testing. For more information, send an e-mail to mjs52@psu.edu.
