LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – Pottsgrove Middle School students and members of the Pottsgrove School District administrative team (at top and below) helped make the first “Empower Your Park” clean-up effort on Saturday (Oct. 15, 2022) at Sanatoga Park a resounding success, Lower Pottsgrove Township Manager Ed Wagner happily reported.

“They were a pleasure to work with and completed all their work within the two-hour time frame,” Wagner said of the group, noting the township greatly appreciated their help.

The band shell is one of the township’s most popular venues annually between June and August for its yearly summer concert series. During the course of six free Sunday concerts, with musical entertainment that ranges from folk to rock to Sousa marches, hundreds of guests stream into the park with lawn chairs in hand to enjoy the shows and use the park’s amenities. Some bring picnic dinners and make a night of the event.

A team of about 20 people – consisting of members of Pottsgrove’s National Junior Honor Society, as well as seven school and district leaders that included Superintendent Dr. David Finnerty – arrived at the South Sanatoga Road park to help paint its restrooms and remove what were considered old and potentially dangerous stairs. Both were near its band shell.

The work tackled by the Pottsgrove team, other volunteers, and Lower Pottsgrove employees wasn’t glamorous but certainly was needed, Wagner told the township Board of Commissioners during its Oct. 3 (Monday) meeting.

Pottsgrove willingly responded to the township’s call for help as part of the Empower Your Park program created by the Pottstown Area Regional Recreation Committee. Its seven municipal members operate more than 40 local parks and trails, and all require periodic maintenance to stay in good condition. The committee’s program was designed to encourage volunteer help.

The group was surprised during the day when officers of the township police department dropped by to also lend a hand.

Planning for the Middle School’s participation in the project began in mid-September, and came together in the following weeks, district Communications Specialist Danielle Sabulsky indicated.
