LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – Lower Pottsgrove, which for years has been one of several municipal members of the Pottstown Area Regional Recreation Committee, intends to reaffirm its commitment to the organization during the township Board of Commissioners’ meeting on Dec. 5 (2022; Monday).

Commissioners will again approve and authorize the township’s participation so the independent committee can admit its eighth and newest member, Washington Township in Berks County.

It’s a legal formality required of all participants. Elected officials in Pottstown Borough and Douglass, New Hanover, and Upper and West Pottsgrove townships, all in Montgomery County, and North and East Coventry townships in Chester County, either already have or are scheduled to issue similar authorizations.

The committee was created in 2005, with a goal to improve management and use “of future development and protection of the area’s unique historical, cultural and natural amenities.” Its comprehensive plan for members parks and regional activities has since “become one of the largest multi-municipal planning efforts in Pennsylvania,” according to its website. Committee representatives meet monthly.

Washington Township officials approached the committee about membership during late summer as their staff was preparing a parks and recreation strategic plan. They’ve concluded joining the committee would be helpful to continue that work, the organization’s Sept. 28 minutes state.

Gaining another member also affects the committee’s work, because it triggers the need for a part-time regional planner. Member municipalities’ dues will somewhat increase as a result, the minutes added.

Lower Pottsgrove commissioners agreed during their Nov. 17 meeting to advertise the coming legal change. Their Dec. 5 meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the township municipal building on Buchert Road. It is free to attend and open to the public. An agenda for the session has not yet been made publicly available, put usually is posted on the township website, here, when ready.
