Student Carols, Shining Tree Warm Up Pottstown

POTTSTOWN PA – A substantial crowd gathered Sunday night (Dec. 4, 2022) at Smith Family Plaza in downtown Pottstown to enjoy hot cocoa and pretzels, hear Pottstown elementary students sing carols, and watch the lighting of the borough Christmas tree.

The event kicked off the holiday selling season for downtown merchants, many of which were open throughout the day – and some into the evening – to receive shoppers. Visitors to the celebration in the plaza were reminded by Pottstown Area Economic Development Director Peggy Lee-Clark to “buy local!,” to benefit from both selections of quality merchandise and support small business owners.

Santa Claus appeared with a bagful of candy canes and distributed them among happy children. Students in a combined chorus from Pottstown School District elementary schools offered their renditions of several holiday songs, and were applauded and cheered for their efforts. Parents, of course, took lots of cell phone photos and videos of family vocalists.

Earlier in the day, Santa dramatically arrived by dragon boat (watch the YouTube video by Evan Brandt, here) from across the Schuylkill River at Riverfront Park on College Drive, and the nearby river interpretive center was open for exploration.
