Five Townships, Boroughs Win Crime-Fighting Funds

HARRISBURG PA – Five municipalities in western Montgomery and northern Chester counties – Lower, Upper, and West Pottsgrove townships, and Pottstown and Phoenixville boroughs – will receive a total of more than $1.12 million in six separate grants just awarded by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency. The money enables them to pursue a variety of law enforcement projects next year.

They are, in:

  • Lower Pottsgrove, $52,797, for local enforcement of the state Medical Marijuana Act;
  • Lower Pottsgrove, $130,000, for local law enforcement;
  • Upper Pottsgrove, $152,000, for local law enforcement;
  • West Pottsgrove, $44,507, for local law enforcement;
  • Potttown, $403,761, for local law enforcement; and
  • Phoenixville, $338,489, for the purchase of software and equipment for records management.

A significant portion of the commission’s distributions, which amounted to roughly $206 million for more than 400 proposals from across the state, consists of federal cash made available through the federal American Rescue Plan Act.

In addition to the funds headed to the five local government winners, nearly 30 other townships and boroughs, county board of commissioners, and non-profit agencies in Montgomery, Berks, and Chester counties are scheduled to receive millions of dollars more in additional grants.

Lower Pottsgrove’s awards were the hot topic of closing minutes at the township Board of Commissioners’ Thursday (Dec. 15) meeting in the Buchert Road municipal building. They praised Police Chief Rick Bell for both his grant-writing skills and the wins they said were destined to help increase local policing efforts.

The commission’s grants were presented a day earlier, Wednesday (Dec. 14), during its final meeting of the year in Harrisburg. Back in September, outgoing Gov. Tom Wolf and Democratic legislators celebrated their ability to secure what he called “record funding” for the commission in the 2022-2023 state budget.
