East High Street Paving Project to Resume This Year

LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – Contractors for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation later this year will pick up where they left off in 2022, and complete repaving of East High Street from North Pleasant View Road in Sanatoga along most of the highway west to the Berks County line, the department has notified the Lower Pottsgrove Board of Commissioners.

Last year the paving project was finished between Limerick and Sanatoga, and then halted for water and natural gas line installations in the village, Manager Ed Wagner explained during the commissioners’ Thursday (Jan. 19, 2023) meeting. Both are now in place underground, and paving can proceed without fear of being ripped up again, he added.

Bids for this “second phase” of work will be sought by the state beginning March 16, according to a PennDOT letter.

Five manhole covers or “castings” that must be replaced are the township’s responsibility, Wagner said. Its public works department has only two available, and he said it takes 14 or more weeks to buy others. “We have a hard time getting them,” Wagner observed. Township Director of Utilities John Fogel and his crew reportedly are already making plans to obtain the remaining three, potentially at lower cost.

One section that reportedly will not be overlaid with new asphalt was completed in downtown Pottstown Borough over the summer. Wagner said he learned, in conversations with borough officials, that portion of the highway is being omitted from the project.
