Pennsburg Bridge Full Closure Postponed to March 20

PENNSBURG PA – A scheduling change has postponed earlier announced plans to fully close the Route 29 bridge that continues under construction between West 10th Street in Pennsburg and West 11th Street in Red Hill, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said. Its round-the-clock bridge closure is now scheduled for March 20 (2023; Monday) through late October, it added.

During the closure, Route 29 drivers will be detoured using Routes 663 and 73. Additionally, drivers on 10th Street will be directed instead to rely on a detour created on Runaway Drive, and Buck Road and 8th Street. Local access will be maintained up to the work zone, PennDOT said.

To address speeding and traffic congestion through the work area, the project includes variable message signs, speed humps, temporary traffic signals, and other safety measures. It also encouraged drivers “to allow extra time when traveling near the work area, because backups and delays will occur.”

All scheduled activities depend on acceptable weather.

PennDOT’s general contractor on the $3.2 million project is H & K Group Inc. of Skippack. It is assigned to remove the bridge superstructure and its upper portion over the former abandoned Perkiomen Railroad to allow for improvements. In part it will eliminate “thru girder beams” at the edge of the travel lanes in an attempt to alleviate crashes and improve safety.

The project also includes constructing sidewalks along both sides of the roadway for pedestrian access, re-aligning the bridge’s “vertical profile” to improve sight distance and reduce rear-end crashes, and installing upgraded signage, guide rails, and pavement markings.
