UPPER POTTSGROVE PA – “Who lives in a pineapple under the sea and became a hot star on Broadway? Why, it’s SpongeBob SquarePants!”

And Broadway, in this case, is coming to Pottsgrove Middle School (at top). Its students will present their production of “SpongeBob the Musical: Youth Edition” from Thursday through Saturday (March 16-18, 2023) at 7 p.m. nightly in the auditorium at the school, 1351 N. Hanover St.

The show, an adaptation of the Nickelodeon channel television series by Stephen Hillenburg, is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals. It includes original songs by well-known rock and pop stars that include Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, The Flaming Lips, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, and They Might Be Giants.

The story line is upbeat, and demonstrates how “the power of optimism really can save the world!,” according to Concord. “When the citizens of Bikini Bottom discover that a volcano will soon erupt and destroy their humble home, SpongeBob and his friends must come together to save the fate of their undersea world. With lives hanging in the balance and all hope lost, a most unexpected hero rises up.”

West Pottsgrove Elementary School teacher Thomas Yenchick is its director.

Tickets cost $10 and can be purchased at the door on the night of the performance. Want tickets in advance?; call the middle school main office at 610-326-8243 to place a pre-purchase order. Doors will open at 6:30 PM each night. Auditorium seating is open and not assigned.
