BOYERTOWN PA – Local historian Bob Wood (at top) is scheduled to present four programs about our area’s past, and how we rely on it in the present, in conversations Sundays from 1-2 p.m. during May at the Studio B Art Gallery, 39A E. Philadelphia Ave. The events are free to attend and open to the public.
Wood’s history talks next month cover:
- “Five Plate Stoves: Their Manufacture, Installation and Use in Germanic Pennsylvania,” on May 7. Except for the most humble dwelling, Germanic houses were universally furnished with these
- practical and efficient heaters;
- “Making Charcoal Iron in the Schuylkill Watershed,” May 14. Abundant forest for charcoal and high-quality iron ore combined to keep molten iron flowing from early local furnaces;
- “Log Buildings in Germanic South Eastern Pennsylvania,” May 21. It’s safe to say that logs were the primary building material in early rural Pennsylvania; and
- “Kitchen Gardens, Then and Now,” May 28. Immigrants brought with them European garden culture that went back into the depths of time, and which they soon transplanted here.
