LOWER FREDERICK PA – About 200 people – who not only wanted to learn more about Pennsylvania’s native plants, but who also quickly recognized a beautiful day to be outdoors – visited Lower Frederick’s Cuddy Park on Saturday (May 13, 2023) for its “Making Native Plants Work” event.

its usage of locally native plants
The seminar, sponsored by the township Parks and Recreation Board, featured a limited give-away supply of native plants, offered by Behmerwald Nursery, 4904 Garges Rd. It gave kids the chance to indulge (below) in face painting, leaf printing, and creating “seed bombs” to help distribute beneficial plants over a broad area.

The board’s core audience, though, consisted of adults responsible for home gardening, maintenance, and landscaping chores. Through demonstrations and discussion hosted by guest speakers, they heard about the value of plants that call the state home, how cultivating them fosters wildlife development, and how they also guard against invasive species that can damage the ecosystem.
The seminar was a first of its kind for the park board, and a success that follows on the heels of other long-standing and well-received events at the parks, its members indicated.
