LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – There’s good news from the Lower Pottsgrove Public Works Department for young athletes looking to engage in competitive sports at the township’s Gerald Richards Park on Buchert Road. Director of Utilities John Fogel and his team are working to complete their preparations to officially open its fields for players.
The anticipated opening day is April 21 (2023, Friday), township Manager Ed Wagner notified the Board of Commissioners during its Monday (April 3) meeting.
The Richards Park soccer fields grew in number during the past 12 months, with the newest being added closest to Buchert Road on the park’s east side. It was made possible by a variety of grants sought and won by the township. The new field, now lush with grass, was still in an early state of construction slightly more than a year ago (at top), on March 8, 2022.
Primary occupants of the fields for games at this time of year are the Pottsgrove Soccer Club and the Pottsgrove-Pottstown Little League. Team practices for both began in March across several municipalities’, following player registrations that generally ended in February. Soccer club intramural play began April 1 (Saturday) at various fields.
Richards Park will be the site of the soccer club’s annual “Fair Play Festival,” with games, food, prizes, raffles, a moon bounce, and “lots of soccer.” It’s planned for May 15.
At Sanatoga Park
The soccer club website indicates the soccer field at the upper level of Sanatoga Park on South Park Road also is ready. It has scheduled boys travel team tryouts at Sanatoga Park for April 24 and 26 (Monday and Wednesday), and girls travel team tryouts for May 1 and 3 (Monday and Wednesday).
