The derailment disaster affecting portions of Ohio and Pennsylvania prompted U.S. senators this week to propose new railroad safety legislation. Problems occurring there now also were concerns in Montgomery County during 2015.
In what responding fire police claim was the latest of several similar incidents in recent days, railroad crossing gates lowered prematurely Friday night on South Hanover Street. A train arrived about 15 minutes later.
A portion of Arch Street between 2nd Avenue and Diamond Place in the borough is planned for closure and detours Tuesday and Wednesday so Norfolk Southern can conduct railroad crossing maintenance.
A portion of Hanover Street across Pottstown and North Coventry, between High Street and U.S. Route 422, remains closed through Friday due to railroad crossing upgrade work by Norfolk Southern.
Hanover Street in Pottstown, between River Road and High Street, will be closed for four days beginning Monday to a rail crossing can be replaced. Be prepared for delays.
The South Hanover Street closure by Norfolk Southern will occur Aug. 13-17.
