State Expects 3.5Mln Thanksgiving Travelers on Roads

State Expects 3.5Mln Thanksgiving Travelers on Roads

November 22, 2022

HARRISBURG PA – Thanksgiving will again be “the busiest travel holiday of the year,” Pennsylvania Turnpike officials predicted Monday (Nov. 21, 2022) in Harrisburg. They expect about 3.5 million drivers to travel within the state during the six-day period that began Tuesday (Nov. 22, 2022) and will end Sunday (Nov. 27).

Tuesday and Wednesday will be the heaviest travel days, according to the turnpike. Travelers should plan their trips accordingly, it urged.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and state Department of Transportation both pledged to “remove lane restrictions and suspend construction projects wherever possible” to avoid excessively slowing traffic.

The state also has created an online “Holiday Traffic Page,” here, that allows users to “to see how traffic speeds on the Wednesday before and Sunday after Thanksgiving in 2019 and 2021 compare to traffic conditions during a typical, non-holiday week.” It’s intended to help drivers “decide the best times to travel during the holiday,” officials said.

The public can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles in Pennsylvania by visiting its 5-1-1 PA website, here, on mobile and desktop devices. The service is free and available 24 hours a day. It provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.
