PENNSBURG PA – Learn how draft horses played important roles throughout history – pulling farm machinery in the fields, delivering goods, and hauling Conestoga wagons – during a Feb. 19 (2023; Sunday) talk about “Farming with Draft Horses and Other Animals” at 2 p.m. in Pennsburg’s Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center, 105 Seminary St.
Dr. Kaitlyn Reist of the Gilbertsville Veterinary Hospital, who grew up with draft animals, will speak on draft horses and farming practices from the late 1700s to early 1900s. She also will touch briefly on other types of draft animals including oxen and mules, and will display artifacts associated with horses, the Conestoga wagon, and agricultural tools at the presentation.
The program is free to attend, open to the public at the center, and is available both in-person and on Zoom. Advance registration is appreciated for either; to register call 215-679-3103 or send an e-mail to info@schwenkfelder.org.
Tours also will be available of the 1826 Seipt Family Barn; they can be scheduled while at the center, or by calling ahead to 215-679-3103.
The Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center is the regional history museum for the Upper Perkiomen Valley. Admission is always free, and the center is open to the public Tuesdays through Fridays daily 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. except Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sundays from 1-4 p.m.
