HARRISBURG PA – The Schuylkill River and the Perkiomen Creek, both of which flow through western Montgomery County, are in the running to be named as Pennsylvania’s 2023 River of the Year. Public votes for either are being accepted online, here, through Jan. 18 (2023; Wednesday). Voters must use an e-mail address, which can be used only once, to cast their ballot.
To be fair, it should be mentioned that the Conestoga River in central Lancaster County, as well as the north branch of the Susquehanna River in the state’s northeastern portion, also were nominated for the honor.
Agencies involved with the winning river’s management must schedule a year-round slate of activities and events, including a paddling trip, to celebrate. A $10,000 grant from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is intended to cover the winner’s costs. Nominations were based on each waterway’s conservation needs and successes, as well as prospective celebration plans.
Department Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn reports the annual contest “continues to be increasingly popular” as it enters its 13th year.
